Microsoft has announced that starting in November 2024, Xbox games will be available for direct purchase and play through the Xbox app on Android devices. This move comes following a landmark U.S. court ruling, which forces Google to allow third-party app stores more freedom within the Play Store and to remove its requirement for developers to use the Play Billing system.
Sarah Bond, Xbox President, shared the news, expressing the company’s excitement:
“With the recent court ruling in favor of opening Google’s mobile store, we’re thrilled to offer players more choice. Starting in November, gamers can purchase and play Xbox games directly through the Xbox app on Android.”
This new development will enable Microsoft to sidestep Google’s traditional 30% fee associated with Play Store purchases, giving users a smoother experience when buying Xbox games. This ruling, which takes effect on November 1, 2024, paves the way for increased competition and could lead to further integration of third-party app stores on Android devices.
This decision marks a significant shift for Microsoft, as it broadens accessibility for Xbox games, making it easier for players to engage with their favorite titles across multiple platforms without the limitations of traditional app store fees.
